Mysticism and adventure characterise the Westman Islands off the south coast of Iceland. Heimaey is not only the largest and only inhabited island in the archipelago, but also the one with the most known volcanic eruptions. In 1973, the Eldfell volcano erupted and buried most of the village under itself. Thanks to a quick evacuation, mostly by fishing boats, all residents could be brought to safety in time. The lava landscape and the Eldheimar Museum bear impressive witness to the event. Your on-board expedition team offers hikes of various lengths. Take the opportunity, for example, to climb Eldfell or marvel at the lava formations on the cliffs.

Discover charming Stromness, the “grey town by the sea”, which owes its name to its characteristic scenic houses. In the listed centre, inviting piers, imposing warehouses and trading houses combine history and maritime flair perfectly. An absolute highlight is the impressive former Viking settlement, which allows you to immerse yourself in the fascinating history of this region. Cruising through Scapa Flow, a large harbour bay in the south of the Scottish Orkney Islands, combines the North Sea world with history. Around you is nothing but a wide expanse of water lined with gentle coastal strips. And below you are the remains of the dramatic scuttling of the German High Seas Fleet in 1919: during the negotiations for the Treaty of Versailles, the German Rear Admiral Ludwig von Reuter feared that the ships could fall into the hands of the Allies. To prevent this, he ordered the sinking of his own entire fleet in order to preserve the honour of the German Navy. Today, Scapa Flow is a popular diving destination known for its wrecks.

Untamed charm envelops the Orkney Islands. The archipelago, consisting of around 70 islands, forms a spectacular backdrop for your insights into European cultural history. Kirkwall on the mainland, with its red and yellow sandstone St Magnus Cathedral built in 1137, is an imposing reminder of the Middle Ages – one of the most interesting buildings in northern Scotland. Invergordon, 07.00 – 17.00 hrs

Invergordon lies in the middle of the classic Scottish Highlands. Previously known by the Gallic name An Rudha (meaning “headland”), the town owes its current name to Sir William Gordon, a local landowner in the early 18th century. The town has grown since then and now has around 4,000 inhabitants. Invergordon is an important centre for the oil industry, repairing and producing equipment for the nearby oil rigs in the North Sea. For nature lovers, the town serves as a starting point for excursions to the beautiful surrounding area, such as Loch Ness or Inverness, the capital of the Scottish Highlands.

Newhaven (Edinburgh), arrival 12.00 hrs 

Close at hand and yet still unknown: on Scotland’s east coast, prepare to be surprised as you explore Edinburgh from the harbour in Newhaven. The capital is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an open book of cultural and architectural history. Winding streets, ancient and neoclassical architecture, society and monarchy – a walk through the city on your own or on excursions with your experts will show you the main facets of the city, crowned by Edinburgh Castle. Home to many Scottish kings, the castle sits majestically in the middle of the city on an extinct volcano. Edinburgh is also a delight for fans of literature: Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson were born here and J. K. Rowling drew inspiration from the city for her Harry Potter novels, some of which she wrote in The Elephant House cafe. Look forward to creating your own stories in Edinburgh.

Newhaven (Edinburgh), departure 18.00 hrs 

Newhaven is our starting point for exploring Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. Edinburgh boasts historic architecture, the majestic Edinburgh Castle and the famous Royal Mile. Visit the unique Camera Obscura museum and enjoy the breathtaking view from Carlton Hill. Discover Edinburgh’s lively culture, charming historic streets and warm hospitality.

The Farne Islands off the coast of Northumberland are a revelation for nature lovers. The archipelago has around 20 islands, some of which are only visible at low tide. Here, the untamed sea meets impressive cliffs, which are home to thousands of sea birds including puffins and gannets. You can also often see seal colonies lying on the beaches. Historic lighthouses are a reminder of the story of brave Grace Darling – if the weather permits a Zodiac ride, you will feel particularly close to her story: the lighthouse keeper’s daughter became a heroine in 1838 when she helped her father rescue the victims of a capsized steamship using a small rowing boat. Her spectacular feat made her a national treasure and a symbol of courage and humanity, while the islands took on a heroic aura of their own. 

Cruising on the River Orwell
Ipswich, 13.00 – 19.00 hrs

Experience an unforgettable cruise on the River Orwell through the picturesque Suffolk countryside. Your mind will be on Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden when cruising on the Thames.
