Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon - River Expedition Cruise

This is a true expedition voyage and we explore far into the wilderness into some of the most untouched rainforest in all of the Amazon. We venture far up the least inhabited major river in the Amazon Basin on our expedition vessel, the Motor Yacht Tucano. Weaving in and out of small channels on the Rio Negro, we explore areas very rarely visited and seek out the mysterious life of the wilderness that stirs in the forest and in the heart of wild nature.


Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon is the most thorough, detailed, and sophisticated trip offered in the entire Amazon. Our guides are accomplished naturalists and we see creatures almost never seen by other visitors. The trip is rather like being on a time machine in that we are able to visit places that have not changed for millions of years. Truly the trip of a lifetime.

Days 1 - 3 The Rio Negro

In our well equipped expedition boat The Motor Yacht Tucano, we explore far up the least inhabited river in the Amazon, The Rio Negro. We explore the forest by foot or in our launches, go for swims in the cleanest water in the world, visit with local settlers that live deep in the forest, and spend a great deal of time hunting for and observing the greatest collection of wildlife on earth.

Day 4 Rio Jauaperi

We arrive at extraordinary river called the Rio Jauaperi and spend the day in this unspoiled and lovely rainforest area.

Day 5 Rio Negro

Today we will voyage to the west side of the Rio Negro and continue to scout in our launches and walk in the forest. We will explore according to the weather and water depth areas rarely visited by anyone else. Tonight the M/Y Tucano goes downstream and river depth permitting, will enter an east bank affluent of the Rio Negro and explore on deep into the rainforest on this small river. After our nocturnal exploration of the rainforest in our launches and we return to the Motor Yacht Tucano for “Caipirinha Night” on and perhaps try a bit of samba on the top deck.  (BLD)

We begin the day with a dawn excursion hunting for wakening wildlife followed by a full Brasilian breakfast. We will then go one last time into the forest. In the mid-afternoon we will begin to journey downstream to arrive late in the day at the “Encontra das Aguas” a stark several mile long line where two of the world’s largest rivers, the Amazon and the Rio Negro join in a turbulent maelstrom. Here the dark water of the Negro runs beside the opaque brown water of the Amazon. At sunset the M/Y Tucano will once again turn her bows upstream on the Rio Negro and journey to our overnight anchorage north of the City of Manaus. As we pass in front of Manaus, we will marvel at the scale of one of the world’s largest and most vibrant port cities, that is over one thousand miles from the sea. Tonight we will have a farewell dinner and prepare for an early departure in the morning.  (BLD)

Motor Yacht Tucano is a small expedition vessel purpose-built for exploring the Amazon’s remote tributaries. With just nine outside staterooms, it offers an intimate experience that allows guests to go farther and deeper into the rainforest than larger ships. The yacht features a forward salon and dining lounge with panoramic windows and balconies, a top observation deck with sun canopy, and a mid-deck balcony, providing ideal spaces to observe wildlife such as pink dolphins, macaws, and monkeys along the riverbanks. Its shallow draft and fleet of exploration craft enable access to uncharted waters, ensuring a truly immersive adventure.

The staterooms combine comfort and practicality with private bathrooms, dual showers powered by solar and pressurised systems, air-conditioning, and large windows with screens for rainforest views. The vessel’s design echoes the elegance of 19th-century luxury steamers, with wood paneling, brass accents, and nature-themed artworks throughout. Meals focus on wholesome, locally sourced Amazonian cuisine, accommodating vegetarian and other special diets. • The three rainforest environments that we will observe on Voyage to the Heart of the Amazon are the igapó, terre firme, and varzea

• Important feature of the program will be our visits to the homes of deep forest settlers. We will visit with them and learn what their lives are like, living on the edge of this vast trackless forest

• Travel to the “Encontra das Aguas”, the meeting of the waters of the Amazon and the Negro Rivers. The volume of water is so great at their confluence that Brasilians consider the watercourse created by the joining of these two a completely different river

• In addition to several crew members, all of whom grew up in the forest, the excursion will have a naturalist guide with many years of experience in the Amazon. The combined experience of these guides will help us make sense out of the great profusion of plant and animal life that we will see during the trip
